Two recs, one new, one old.
All the Pretty Little Horses by hollywoodgrrl, Torchwood, Jack character. "It wasn't your fault," says Gwen. Except, when you think about it, it really kinda was. Sure, circumstances dictate a lot of things, and Jack, like the Doctor, approaches everything with the best of intentions. But we all know good intentions in the Who-verse are only fit for paving stones.
hollywoodgrrl draws out this concept beautifully by contrasting the events in Children of Earth with those in earlier Torchwood, and I love how the threads are all aligned to show that, at the end of the day, Jack is the Pied Piper, and he inevitably leads all the children - both literal and metaphorical - straight down to hell. Poignant parallels abound.
Jolene by nicole_anell, Battlestar Galactica, Cally character. Let me preface by saying this is one of the songs that hit me in the gut back when I was 10 years old in my first dance recital. So imagine my ecstasy when I realised the White Stripes had made a particularly raw, sparse cover of it, and that this vid was able to fully utilise, expand on and elevate the concepts contained therein.
I had no interest in Cally whatsoever in the show. She came across as a weak, irrational little bitch most of the time, and the screaming baby scenes certainly did her no favours. But occasionally a vid would come along and shed such an interesting, incisive light on a character like this* that you're left reeling. I'm beyond impressed by the way nicole_anell expanded Boomer from an individual into a concept and Tyrol's affair with Boomer, in light of everything else that had happened over these 4 years, takes a much darker, larger turn. The vid moves effortlessly between personal relationships and the human/Cylon struggle on a much larger scale, and shows Cally fully from her point of view on her own terms, and it's simply breathtaking.
* if you're interested, another vid that hit me very strongly in the same way was keewick's Sugar, for Lana ex Smallville.

OMG Torchwood wallpaper dilemma of monstrous proportions. Which one do I use? ( Read more... )
In other news, I think I've had a breakthrough in my Kings vid. Not tech-wise but in terms of content and how one gets around the fact that Joseph was in all of two minutes and mostly with talky face. I feel semi-pleased with self. There's going to be a metaphor involved. We shall see whether this works. :D

CS3 is starting to spaz out on me. When I export, it doesn't export right - for example, cross-fades don't export as cross-fades, just hard cuts. There are also other effects work not coming through, and I don't even use that many effects; and there are some random stray frames.
I think it helps if I pre-render, but renders always seem to stop halfway because of some unexplained error, and always in a different spot, so I think that's something more related to virtual memory(?) rather than anything intrinsic in the project. If I exit and restart and re-open the project again, the part that I'd already rendered would not have been saved so I can't even render in chunks to work around.
I've only got about 8 .avs files loaded into this project so far, so I hope it's not that .avs overload bug because I hate trying to work around that shit.
I have a feeling this is more due to my computer being old and crappy than anything that can be fixed, but does anyone have any suggestions about how to make things run smoother? I'm on a 3.06GHz Pentium 4, 1 gig RAM, WinXP. I know, it's pretty dinosaur.
Not too worried at this stage. If all else fails, I revert to Premiere 6.5 for the time being and simply use Pro as an additional clip-specific tool like AE.

I'm yet to articulate feedback but thought I'd drop the insta-rec first.
Khwaab (The Dream) by bananainpyjamas, Slumdog Millionaire. A love story that unwinds effortlessly through a non-linear narrative and fantastic parallels, underpinned by beautiful light and motion and musicality. It's beyond gorgeous. Go. Watch.

Just installed Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, and downloaded and reinstalled the latest version of the AMVapp.
I made an AVS file using the AVIsource command referencing an AVI on my hard drive. When I try to import the AVS file into Premiere, I'm getting a file import failure message: "File format not supported".
I see from A&E's tech guide that the Premiere Import Plugin that comes with the AMVapp only works for Premiere 5.x, 6.x, and Pro 1.x, and therefore assume it doesn't work with Pro CS3. How to get around this?
I'm dead in the water until this is fixed, so all help would be very gladly received.
Sorted. Thanks Frivvy.
ETA: okay, new question. Why does my waveform look like shit in CS3? Is there any way to make it... look less like shit and more like the waveform that I was used to? Or would I just have to get used to looking at this?
Sorted again! Thanks Frivvy. :D
