New(ish) Firefly vid - Fade Out

Fade Out (redux)
Fandom: Firefly
Song/Artist: Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead
Length: 4:12 minutes
Summary: A black and white video looking at Simon and River, focusing on all the sacrifices that Simon has made and the life he had received in return. This is the remastered version of an original vid I made about half a year ago, completely reformatted to 1.78:1 PAL standard aspect ratio, with better video/audio quality, especially in the MPG version. There had also been various and sometimes substantial changes in editing/content.
Spoilers: Contains clips from Firefly and the R. Tam Sessions. Nothing from movie/trailer.
Taken offline as of 7 Sep 2006. Please let me know if you'd like me to re-upload it temporarily.
Feedback is appreciated. :) Although if you spoil me for Serenity I will hunt you down with a machete and hack you to tiny little pieces. It doesn't come out in cinemas here until November 10th.
Notes
I am very proud of how this vid turned out. The start of it is very similar to the original version, but as the vid progresses more and more deviations begin to show. First of all, I used some clips from the R. Tam "sessions", which was great fun. The footage I had were only available in 282kbps, which was a little shoddier than the rest of the footage, but hopefully it's not too noticeable. I really thought these clips added something to the overall desolate feeling.
The editing this time round focused on the pace of individual clip content; I wanted things to move together as well as possible, without awkward/weird lulls at inopportune moments. Cut out some "talky face" from the original vid, and substituted some clips that are more lyrics-oriented. And hopefully the drum fills are more on-point this time round.
A couple of new transitions and effects were actually pilfered from the original Radiohead music clip itself: I was rewatching it the other day and really fell in love with how they played with light and clip speed. That music video remains my favourite EVER. Plus, it's directed by the best music video director in the entire world, the amazing Jonathan Glazer.
POV is strange with this vid. It starts being River with the "I can feel their blue hands touching me" bit, but quickly segues into Simon with the onset of the second verse. But there is an odd symmetry to that, and the lyrics usually end up being first person plural anyway, so no harm no foul, really.
The dreaded "stars" shot. Anyone who's ever tried to vid to River and Simon would know that annoying clip in Bushwhacked where she's grinning out into space and he looks to see what she's looking at. And she's looking at this big, black screen. Of course, on DVD quality vid it's apparent she's looking at a big black sky full of stars, but in poorer quality video, it's usually just black and therefore completely meaningless to the casual viewer. I fiddled with contrast/brightness for a long time with this, and am still not totally satisfied, but hopefully (especially if your room is relatively dark), you should be able to see the stars instead of just one black clip.
(An incidental shout-out to
corn_child013's Shh here, because hers is one of the clearest "stars" shots I've ever seen.)
Presentation-wise, I had always been bothered by the original vid where certain footage was in the slightly narrower NTSC frame height standard, and also where the white flashes went over the widescreen bars. All that's been rectified now, and the audio quality is better this time round also, being sourced from 1411kbps WAV instead of the usual 128kbps MP3.
Bitching: the wmv version has a brief black flicker at 2:43 which I didn't intend, and the mpg version craps out a little at 2:07. All goes down to my stupid program, and since it takes about 2 hours to export the vid each time, I just couldn't be arsed re-exporting for these small blemishes. V. unscrupulous of me, but there you go.
And that's about it! Sorry for the ramble and the wank.
In other vidding news, I've found a song for my Mal character study so I'm gonna make that next. The Connor/Cordy vid is on hold for now.
And new LJ icons to celebrate the "aspicious" [sic, I know, I know], a.k.a "suspicious" occasion. I used to be really freaked out by Brian's bearded pic, but now I find it strangely hot. Damn those scan lines! And I kept the finger one for now because it's so the multi-purpose icon. Whee! Over and out.
