New(ish) Firefly vid - Fade Out
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Fade Out (redux)
Fandom: Firefly
Song/Artist: Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead
Length: 4:12 minutes

Summary: A black and white video looking at Simon and River, focusing on all the sacrifices that Simon has made and the life he had received in return. This is the remastered version of an original vid I made about half a year ago, completely reformatted to 1.78:1 PAL standard aspect ratio, with better video/audio quality, especially in the MPG version. There had also been various and sometimes substantial changes in editing/content.

Spoilers: Contains clips from Firefly and the R. Tam Sessions. Nothing from movie/trailer.

Taken offline as of 7 Sep 2006. Please let me know if you'd like me to re-upload it temporarily.

Feedback is appreciated. :) Although if you spoil me for Serenity I will hunt you down with a machete and hack you to tiny little pieces. It doesn't come out in cinemas here until November 10th.

Notes
I am very proud of how this vid turned out. The start of it is very similar to the original version, but as the vid progresses more and more deviations begin to show. First of all, I used some clips from the R. Tam "sessions", which was great fun. The footage I had were only available in 282kbps, which was a little shoddier than the rest of the footage, but hopefully it's not too noticeable. I really thought these clips added something to the overall desolate feeling.

The editing this time round focused on the pace of individual clip content; I wanted things to move together as well as possible, without awkward/weird lulls at inopportune moments. Cut out some "talky face" from the original vid, and substituted some clips that are more lyrics-oriented. And hopefully the drum fills are more on-point this time round.

A couple of new transitions and effects were actually pilfered from the original Radiohead music clip itself: I was rewatching it the other day and really fell in love with how they played with light and clip speed. That music video remains my favourite EVER. Plus, it's directed by the best music video director in the entire world, the amazing Jonathan Glazer.

POV is strange with this vid. It starts being River with the "I can feel their blue hands touching me" bit, but quickly segues into Simon with the onset of the second verse. But there is an odd symmetry to that, and the lyrics usually end up being first person plural anyway, so no harm no foul, really.

The dreaded "stars" shot. Anyone who's ever tried to vid to River and Simon would know that annoying clip in Bushwhacked where she's grinning out into space and he looks to see what she's looking at. And she's looking at this big, black screen. Of course, on DVD quality vid it's apparent she's looking at a big black sky full of stars, but in poorer quality video, it's usually just black and therefore completely meaningless to the casual viewer. I fiddled with contrast/brightness for a long time with this, and am still not totally satisfied, but hopefully (especially if your room is relatively dark), you should be able to see the stars instead of just one black clip.

(An incidental shout-out to [info]corn_child013's Shh here, because hers is one of the clearest "stars" shots I've ever seen.)

Presentation-wise, I had always been bothered by the original vid where certain footage was in the slightly narrower NTSC frame height standard, and also where the white flashes went over the widescreen bars. All that's been rectified now, and the audio quality is better this time round also, being sourced from 1411kbps WAV instead of the usual 128kbps MP3.

Bitching: the wmv version has a brief black flicker at 2:43 which I didn't intend, and the mpg version craps out a little at 2:07. All goes down to my stupid program, and since it takes about 2 hours to export the vid each time, I just couldn't be arsed re-exporting for these small blemishes. V. unscrupulous of me, but there you go.

And that's about it! Sorry for the ramble and the wank.

In other vidding news, I've found a song for my Mal character study so I'm gonna make that next. The Connor/Cordy vid is on hold for now.

And new LJ icons to celebrate the "aspicious" [sic, I know, I know], a.k.a "suspicious" occasion. I used to be really freaked out by Brian's bearded pic, but now I find it strangely hot. Damn those scan lines! And I kept the finger one for now because it's so the multi-purpose icon. Whee! Over and out.

The original was gorgeous, this version even more so. I prefer my Simon and River completely CSI-free, and this song choice is vague enough lyrically that you can still see their strong relationship without it seeming... you know. Twisted. The edits did seem to fit more smoothly to the music. Very nicely done.

I think when I commented on the original vid, I mentioned that "Street Spirit" is one of my most favorite songs, and that's still true. I just don't get sick of it. It should be vidded at least once in every fandom. :)

Thank ye. I think I've burrowed so far into CSI-dom that I'd forgotten what it must be like for people who don't see them that way. I'm glad the vid is left ambiguous though - meaning shouldn't be forced upon people. This song is indeed one of the greatest songs ever written. Although I quiver slightly in my boots thinking about what would happen if everybody's grandmother's dog started vidding to it in every fandom. To quote Xander, "it cheapens it for the rest of us!" :D

Hi, you may remember me from when you posted in the Tru Calling community. I love everything you do. Therefore, I am going to add this journal. If that's okay with you.

Also, you haven't seen the movie yet? Is it because it hasn't been released where you're at yet?

Of course I don't mind! Am terribly flattered. I think you will find that I talk an inordinate amount of crap, but other than that, there should be little harm in friending me. :D I should hope.

The bleeding movie comes out in New Zealand a freaking six weeks behind everyone else (except Germany, it seems). I'm going to see it on the first day, which is the 10th. Only four more days to go! If I get spoiled now after months of effort, I'll claw somebody's eyes out, I swear to god.

Sadly, not true.

It is (apparently) being released in South Africa on November 18th. And if that isn't true... heads will roll. *snarls*

I love River, and so am downloading your vid now - might take a while, thanks to dial-up, but I'll get there eventually. And then the feedback will flow. *g*

Ahh, that really sucks. At least you haven's succumbed to searching out spoilers. It was so hard for me not to. And I only had to deal with the people who had seen it before the premiere.

You'll love it though, it definitely lived up to my expectations and more.

I love both versions! I just watched them back to back, old next to new, and while I obviously noticed the differences, and some were indeed better, I still like them each ^_^ I have to admit I'm not a massive fan of the blurry effect, but it does work. I still adore the song, and now I'll have to go watch the actual music video for it. Ah, Simon and River.... they're so beautiful. Lovely job :)

(I could see the stars quite clearly, btw!)

Haha, I hadn't thought about watching them back to back. Talk about depressing. Thank you for your nice words! I think I'll have to go and watch my Radiohead tape now too. Best. vid. ever. Wait, I said that already.

Good to hear about the stars! Was v. worried.

Oh, this is so very beautiful. You really bring out the quiet tragedy that hangs over Simon and River, even during the happier or busier moments.

The black/white is gorgeous, as are the differences in focus, blurry or sharp.

That was so super fantastic!

I love the cut from baby Simon smiling to adult River screaming. It always frustrates me a little, because I want to see more smiling baby Simon. :) But it's really jarring, and it's like the little girl Simon loves breaks so suddenly, in the space of a breath, and I think that small moment really adds to the overall tone of the vid.

Anyway, love!

I felt a palpable despair in watching that vid. The music and the bleak black and white really accentuated the Tams' situation of being on the run, and dealing with madness. That last shot of Simon embracing River on the stake was a shot to the gut.

Thank you for your kind feedback. Emotional response is definitely my first priority so it was really nice to hear about the despair, even though that sorta sounds wrong. :D I'm very glad you enjoyed (again, possibly not the right word!) the vid. :)

LOL, I once wrote an angsty fic, and wasn't sure how to respond when people told me that they were moved to tears. I was glad to get an emotional response, but also felt bad about distressing people.

Well, the bleakness of the vid was appealing to me, and appropriate to the subject matter, if that makes you feel any better.

This video is...just... amazing doesn't cover it. The editing is beautiful and seamless, the song and clip choices are perfect...I have no words. And that, my friend, is a feat. I am going to rec this all over the place, even though it's not terribly new, because EVERYONE needs to see it.

Thank you Nikki. I love this vid: took me several viewings to get the meaning and tie it with a song (I'm new to this and not a native speaker), but when I did - oh my. You pick such beautiful songs for your vids, and this one is such a perfect fit here.

My favorite part is the last, with fade-outs to Simon's old life of being a doctor, and his new life coming into focus. The part which gets me especially hard is the last switch, when Simon is leaving the hospital: this time it gets into focus, as he thinks for the last time what is ahead, with fade-out to the stake. And then that one gets into focus, and... oh my, it's a heartbreak.

I'll be soo looking forward to more Firefly vids from you. Thank you.

Thank you! I'm really glad you liked this one. This is definitely one of the most beautiful songs ever, I'm happy that you enjoyed it. :) And the Simon!doctoring part is definitely the crux of the whole thing, so I'm glad you picked up on that.

At the moment I have no further plans for Firefly vids, but who knows when inspiration will strike. ;)
