Notes
ETA 14 Feb: this is the second of the three vids in the Dirty Incestuous Triangle project with Serenity footage. The other two are Body (Mal/River) and Knock Me Out (Simon/Mal).
With the exception of a Buffy/Angel vid planned in the distant future, this is no doubt the most theatrical and ridiculously sentimental vid I will ever do. Am fully aware that I'm shamelessly catering to demographic here. *snerk* Heard this song ages ago and immediately knew I had to make a Simon/River vid to it. The resolve was further cemented when I saw Serenity and realised that some of the scenes would go perfectly with the music. Spent the next few months on tenterhooks, waiting for Serenity footage and deathly afraid that some other Simon/River vidder was going to pip me to this song.
Even though crazy space incest is labelled as "optional", I think it's v. obvious where my 'ship loyalties lie. I hadn't intended for this much of it to come through, actually. The subtext pretty much just leapt off the source of its own accord. Nobody does love better than Simon and River, no matter what kind of love it is, or whether there are boundaries.
There are a lot of movement effects in this vid, many zooms and push/pulls, and sometimes I felt I went slightly overboard. Would be v. interested to know people's thoughts on them. Good? Bad? The ideal reaction, of course, would be that you didn't notice them at all.
And a wee shameless self-pimp: if you enjoyed this vid, please consider nominating it at the Blue Sun Fandom Awards. :)
And while I'm at it, I might as well pimp my River/Simon short fic, Six Senses, as well. ;)
I'll be taking a short break from vidding; need to retreat and ponder my next move. Plus, at three months, next instalment of YA fic is beyond grossly overdue.

The editing was really good. I liked the slow fades in the beginning, and all the blurriness you used later. And you did a good job with editing the build up of faster clips later.
I'm mostly impressed by the great song choice and how well you used this. The clip matching to lyrics was excellent. :)
And I liked the audio on the title at the beginning.

This is an extremely engaging vid
I loved the effects...I loved the way the music changes and you carry the visual effects through it to create a sort of dizzying montage. I was completely swept up in your beautiful love story even though I don't really have strong attachments to the characters. This was very well told.Rae

I'm extremely glad to hear your thoughts on the effects, I really appreciate it. Thank you for your wonderful comments!January 15 2006, 03:06:17 UTC 6 years ago
The music was an excellent pick, I love how perfectly you matched the lyrics to the actions, like the "corridors and through automatic doors" line.
The effects were very well done.
This video absolutely amazed me to death and had me sitting in my chair in shock for a good five minutes before I could slink back here and comment.
Magnificent.

(First, I love the song, and thought I might be one of the only people in the world who knows it exists.)
Okay, the vid. What I have seen of your work has really blown me away. This is definitely no exception; the timing is absolutely superb. More than anything, I'm really stuck on that -- and I love the few moments (ie, Simon running down the stairs towards his infirmary) where it went all blurry/out of focus. Just really, really awesome stuff. Good job! *sits and waits patiently for more. There is more, right? Please? omgplease*

Really? I was the opposite - extremely afraid it'd get vidded to a lot. At the height of its release I think this song was in the top 5 on the UK singles charts, and it was largely the reason why Athlete's album managed to make it to #1 for a short time. So I had been waiting around for Serenity footage for a few months, scared to death that someone would make this vid first. :D But I guess it's less ubiquitous in North America.
Thank you SO much for your wonderful comments on the vid, especially on the timing because I do pride myself on it and it's really lovely to see it recognised and pointed out. I definitely have a Simon/Mal in the pipeline, and I'm toying with a movie-only Simon/River idea, but it'd be sort of different and I don't know if I'll carry through with it. Guess we'll see! :D

Anyway, I've downloaded several of your vids from the past -love your work- and this one is no exception. There is a lot of movement but it adds to it. You match up images just right with the words and it makes it that much easier to identify the song with the characters. I liked the fades. thanks so much for sharing.

It's about Myla, the daughter of the singer, who'd had a seizure 5 hours after she was born and had to be rushed into intensive care. I was reading a magazine article where he talked about it, and it was just incredibly moving and really added all these emotional layers to the song. Thank you so much for your kind feedback! I really appreciate it and I'm glad you enjoyed the vid. :)

January 15 2006, 09:03:23 UTC 6 years ago
Hehe, well, I still owe you feedback for Newport's Son and parts 2-4 of Cowardly Acts, so we're half and half on that one. I should get on it soon - am feeling extremely guilty lately for slacking. Oh, hey, thinking of entering anything for this round of the TCAs? *puppy dog eyes*
January 15 2006, 09:08:43 UTC 6 years ago
It just hit me *right here*. Loved the voiceovers, *looooved* the sense of movement, especially the internal stuff. I did notice the majority of the added external movement, but I think you used it really really well. There's just no way to quite mimic the changing perspective of a real moving camera. ;D For someone not familiar with the guts of vidding though, I would imagine they are almost seamless. The added punch you got out of them was great. :D And I'm normally one of those people that shies away from them. :}
Really loved it.
January 15 2006, 11:39:04 UTC 6 years ago
Word to that. It's sad that vidding has all sorts of intrinsic limitations like this, unlike, say, writing, where you have a much freer rein artistically. External movement's something I've just started experimenting with recently, and thank you so much for your thoughts on them, I really appreciate it. Am terribly flattered and incredibly happy that you enjoyed the vid! :)

Just, wow...
I haven't seen many vids, so I don't know how much my opinion's worth.. but.. wow.As a lot of other people have already expressed my general sense of awe very well, I'll jump straight to the specifics.
- The simple 'Wires' title, with the voiceover from the R. Tam Sessions. That introduced it really well, set the whole tone for the entire vid.
- The first time I saw the lyrics matched so god. damn. well. to the video (especially the 'you've got wires, coming out of your skin' bit) I was just stunned. It's just hard to put this into words.. you started with some scenes clipped together like any other vid, but then the lyrics started and the vid jumped straight to the wires scene, which was so blue so it just contrasted so much with the clips before it. It was simple.. awesome, really.
- Despite being aware of your comments/concerns before hand, I really didn't notice the effects at all apart from the very rapid clipping between a scene of Serenity flying off, which was a little at odds with the rest of the character-centric scnes you used.
- When Simon's come down the corridor at 3.20, the blur just makes the emotions involved so much more powerful, as if there's too much going on to even think properly. And then, straight after that, the music flares up and we see Simon being shot, and River's reaction, and then he's still falling..and wowwowow.. The word 'catharsis' (from the latin for 'purification', which happens when someone just feels far too much) springs to mind after watching this.
- Finally, just had to mention the ever so subtle fade at around ~1.40, with his father on the left side of the frame. I almost missed it, but I didn't.. and it added so much. For something that would work perfectly well without it, the presense of it just made it seem so much more.. well, words fail me.
Out of curiosity, what program do you use for creating these?
(As a sidenote, the last vid I did see was one of yours too, I think, set to Street Spirit (Fade Out) -- I ended up buying The Bends because of that)
Something else that occurred to me, too, in watching this was how incredible it was that there was so much material for making something like this from a series that was cancelled so early, and the movie from it. Speaks volumes about the writers and the actors, I suppose.
Anyway, sorry for talking so much *is slightly embarrassed* Thanks so much for making this! An amazing talent you have.. I really hope you make more, too, as there just isn't enough material for this amazing ship!

Re: Just, wow...
*is floored*Wow, thank you so, so much for your wonderful, kind and detailed feedback, it completely made my day. And I LOVE that you commented on specific things because a lot of them (the tiny opening title, the start of verse 1, the overlay of the father and of course Simon getting shot) are details that I have inordinate personal love for, and it's just nifty when other people point them out.
Now that you mention it, the interlaced shot of Serenity does look a bit odd amongst the other stuff. Oh well, I was trying for the metaphor there, but it didn't quite look the way it did in my head! :D
It's bleeding awesome that you got The Bends because of Street Spirit, that really means so much to me. It's a wonderful album and rife with vidding opportunity. ;)
For the general editing portion of the vid I use the v. basic Intervideo WinDVD Creator, and for most of the effects I use Pinnacle Liquid 6, which is much more sophisticated but sadly takes up way too much disk space/RAM to be used for vidding in general. I keep putting off finding a new program, even though I really should.
Thank you again - so much - for taking the time to write.
January 15 2006, 21:05:34 UTC 6 years ago
Watching your vid, I became convinced that the song you used was actually written about Simon and River, so perfect was the fit between the lyrics and the clips you chose.
Yours are the only fanvids I've seen with the power to make me weep. This one is just amazing. Thank you.

Crying is good! I LOVE that you said that because emotional resonance is the thing that makes it all worthwhile, and it means so much to me to hear (read?) you say that. So I thank you profusely and am terribly glad that you enjoyed the vid. :)

Hee. I'm the same with my vids. I'm so paranoid about someone 'stealing' songs that I want to do VM vids to, that I don't tell anyone. I have had some people do songs I want, but they were either just ideas I had no intention of doing, or their vid had a completely different tone, so I'm alright at the moment. ;)
January 16 2006, 10:19:18 UTC 6 years ago
Haha, I can so relate on that front. Glad to hear that any of your ideas haven't been tragically laid to rest that way! Thank you very much for your lovely feedback. :) :) You are of the rocking persuasion. And I v. much look forward to downloading the vid you just posted, but will have to wait a few hours cos Mark's playing online games and sucking up all the connection speed.

I had always thought Simon and River were close. Very close. It was always this thing that no matter if Simon ended up with Kaylee, his best and most important relationship would always be with River. They'd die for one another, they'd do anything for one another. In a strange way, Simon and River have a strange, co-dependent, somewhat twisted love. It's sad and yet beautiful.
What I'm going on about is this: your videos really show the different (and sometimes odd) levels of Simon and River perfectly. I really do love them.

Ha, it's entirely twisted. That's why we love them. One day everyone will be seduced into the crazy space incest! Mwahaha!

That has to be to this day my favorite vid from you. Those lyrics! With those images! They meshed together so perfectly. I'm having a Simon/River fan moment and I haven't had one of those in quite a while. Bringing back the love they cut out of the movie!

You are still by far the best Firefly vidder I've seen -- and this one is another wonderful piece of work.
I actually liked having all the effects there, makes it a more exciting vid if you ask me! I love when you do those quick cuts, and the pull/push was the right amount I feel.
And of course, it's great to see you use movie clips ;)
Good luck with your next vidding adventures, I'm sure they won't disappoint!!
January 17 2006, 06:20:34 UTC 6 years ago
I actually was really unsure about the quick cuts in this one - something about it just didn't sit right with me - but I'm glad you enjoyed it and it is quite reassuring. And am extremely happy that you thought the effects were appropriate.
Thanks again! I really appreciate you taking the time to write. And please, feel free to call me Nicky. :)
